150-13 Sexual Harassment

I. Purpose

The University of California, San Francisco (UCSF) is committed to creating and maintaining a community in which all persons who participate in University programs and activities can work together in an atmosphere free of all forms of harassment, exploitation, or intimidation, including sexual. It is the responsibility of the University to prevent sexual harassment, if possible; correct it when it occurs; and to take appropriate disciplinary action, as necessary, against behavior that is a violation of the policy.


II. Definitions

Unwelcome sexual advances, requests for sexual favors, and other verbal or physical conduct of a sexual nature constitute sexual harassment when:

In determining whether the alleged conduct constitutes sexual harassment, consideration shall be given to the record as a whole and to the totality of the circumstances, including the context in which the alleged incident(s) occurred.


III. Policy

Sexual harassment is prohibited both by law and by University policy. It is the intention of UCSF to take whatever action may be needed to prevent, correct and, as necessary, discipline behavior that violates this policy.

University policy and state law prohibit retaliation against any individual who opposes sexual harassment, files a complaint, or assists or participates in any manner in an investigation or proceeding conducted by the University or an external agency.


IV. Responsibility

Department heads and management personnel are responsible for enforcing this policy in their areas.
