100-19 Ordering Animals for Research

I. Purpose

This policy has been established to ensure compliance with federal law and regulations on ordering animals for research.

II. Definitions

None provided.

III. Policy

All animals used at any UCSF site must be covered by an approved Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee (IACUC) protocol, and there must be adequate space to house such animals.

A. All animals used in conjunction with any UCSF activity at UCSF sites must be ordered through the Laboratory Animal Resource Center. Such sites include the Parnassus campus, UCSF/Mount Zion Medical Center, Laurel Heights, Mission Center, Hunters Point, and all sites at San Francisco General Hospital.

B. Animals that are obtained free of charge from a colleague and that are to be shipped to a UCSF site must be coordinated through the Laboratory Animal Resource Center.

C. At the time that animals are ordered, the person placing the order must provide the approval number of the IACUC protocol for which the animals will be used.
